Observing changes through instagram
back to queering spaces
food styling and self advertisement is definitely very popular for restaurants, it creates a very 'fancy' image of the area
I will be using instagram as a tool to examine the changes that the area has been going through. I typed in #middelladplein and these are the photos that came up. They go from now, 2020 to 2015. One can definitely see a change in the photos, as in the food styling for example, but I believe that is because instagram became very popular that way and people have become more advanced with it. Can these photos show us a change in the feeling of the area though?
this image is very interesting, it shows the public criticism people had with the terraces opening up and taking away space from the park in the middle
Two reoccurring establishments are Mr Nono, a pancake house and De Buffel, a restuarant. During the corona crisis this spring/summer it seems they have tried their hardest to appear welcoming.
Many restaurants now had outside terraces and tried their best to welcome their clientel
summer 2019 - above photos are from a multicultural food court that happened in the square

2018 - here you can see the structure called the Maaskijker that moved around the city
from looking into these photos it seems that there was an architecture festival happening, called the ZigZag festival, they are the ones that made the Maaskijker or Street Viewer, it seems that Middellandplein was one of the locations for their tour

in 2017, the pink monster Ox-Alien, which is painted all around Rotterdsm, joined Middellandstraat
These are the earliest photos, from 2015, not as colourful or stylised. They are mostly from an old cafe called Espresso Dates
